The Most I’ll Confess is the first official solo release from Lost and Found Generation founder, Mister Sayre. This Oakland-based, 26 year-old MC has shown great patience in putting together a team of producers and guests that make his debut album an overwhelming feast of ambitious production and lyrics. While, LFG members Ashkon, Avie, Coley-Cole, Samix and DJ Silly Kid all appear on The M.I.C., they are joined by some of the Bay Area Hip-Hop scene’s most unique talent. Zion (Zion I) joins Sayre and Coley Cole on “Hoods,” a bass-heavy, manic, socio-political rant built around a De La Soul sample. Richie Cunning, likely the Bay’s best up-and-coming emcee, rides shotgun on the rock-tinged “No Sympathy,” and long-time Sage Francis DJ and collaborator, MF Shalem had a hand in five tracks. The album’s production is constantly soulful and evocative without ever losing track of its essential, abrasive edge. Forced to make a comparison one might point to early RZA, but the blend of contemporary software, samplers and live musicians used on The M.I.C. gives the largely sample-based project a sound all its own. As an MC, Mister Sayre’s songwriting, chaotic rhythms and complicated rhyme patterns are all consistently challenging without becoming unapproachable. A recent review from a critic familiar to Sayre’s catalog points out… “This album is enough Sayre to artistically say “this is me,” but it’s enough Brother Ali to easily endear itself to those hip-hop fans that value honesty and intelligence.” At a time when most MCs, mainstream and underground, rely on swagger, style and syllabics, Mister Sayre shows himself to be one of the few who can remain undeniably dope while putting the poetics first. |
